Substrate pH. Linoleum tolerates high alkalinity less well than vinyl, and an unneutralized slab attacks the jute backing and the adhesive bond over years rather than weeks. Testing pH alongside moisture is cheap. Discovering it after the floor lifts is not.
What Facility Teams Should Know About Maintenance
Marmoleum ships with a factory-applied finish. It does not need the stripping and waxing cycle that VCT demands, which is where most of the lifetime cost saving comes from. What it does need is neutral pH cleaning and periodic buffing, and it must be kept away from high-alkaline cleaners, strippers, and abrasive pads.
One characteristic to expect: ambering. A temporary yellow cast from the linseed oil, most visible on light colours after storage in the dark, clearing within days of normal light exposure. We flag it at handover so nobody logs it as a defect on day two.
